Welcoming a newborn into the world is an incredibly special time for families. Those first days are filled with all the important little details – sleepy smiles, itty bitty fingers, and soft snuggles that parents want to remember forever. While beautiful images are the goal of a newborn photography session, a baby’s safety and comfort ALWAYS come first.
If you’re considering doing a newborn photography session, understanding how photographers prioritize safety can help you feel relaxed and confident during your baby’s session.
Newborn Photography Training and Experience
Professional newborn photographers spend tons of time learning how to safely pose and handle newborn babies. Because newborns are so incredibly delicate and still developing physically, proper training is essential.
Experienced newborn photographers understand:
* How to properly support a newborn’s head and neck
* Which poses are safe for babies (not all babies will do every pose and photographers must know when to pivot)
* How to recognize the signs that a baby needs a break
* How to keep sessions calm, relaxed and comfortable
Many newborn photographers also continue their education through attending workshops and doing mentoring sessions to stay up to date on safe newborn posing practices.
Baby-Led Posing (ALWAYS)
One of the most important safety principles in newborn photography is baby-led posing. The baby’s comfort and cues guide the session, not the photographer.
Poses should NEVER be forced – photographers should be gently guiding babies into poses. If a baby resists a pose or becomes unsettled, photographers need to stop and move on to another setup. Reading baby’s cues are SO important.
Every baby is different, and sessions are designed to adapt to each newborn’s needs.
Warm and Comfortable Studio Environment
Newborns cannot regulate their body temperature very well yet, so photographers carefully control the studio temperature to ensure baby is warm and comfortable. This helps mimic the inside of the womb which was nice and toasty warm for them.
Sessions typically include:
* A warm room temperature
* Soft blankets and wraps
* White noise to help soothe babies so they stay relaxed and sleepy
* Calm and serene surroundings
These small details help keep newborns comfortable and sleepy throughout the session.
Assistants and Spotters
Safety during newborn posing often involves using an assistant. An assistant is essentially a spotter and stays close to the baby to keep them safe in-between shots and setups and helps support them when needed.
In some poses, a photographer may take multiple images and combine them later during editing. This technique, called a composite image and this is generally done when doing the “Froggy Pose”, ensures the baby is safely supported the entire time even if the final photo appears more advanced. Having a parent assist is generally not ideal as they are not familiar with what supported is needed but in cases of needing assistance be sure to thoroughly explain what you need the parent to do and watch for. Try to use dad as mom is still recovering from child birth.
Remember – The baby should NEVER be left unsupported.
Sanitized Props and Clean Environment
Cleanliness is another important part of newborn safety.
Photographers typically:
* Wash all wraps and fabrics between sessions
* Sanitize props and surfaces
* Wash or sanitize hands frequently
* Ask parents to reschedule if anyone is feeling unwell
Because newborn immune systems are still developing, maintaining a clean and sanitized environment is essential.
Leave Time for Feeding and Comforting
Unlike other types of photo sessions, newborn sessions are not rushed and should have a relaxed feel. Sessions often last two to three hours depending on the type of session so there is plenty of time for:
* Feeding breaks
* Diaper changes
* Soothing and cuddling
* Settling the baby into sleep or back into sleep
This flexible pace helps keep babies calm and comfortable throughout their photo session.
Creating a Calm Experience for Parents
A safe newborn session experience isn’t just about the baby – it’s also about helping parents feel relaxed, comfortable and supported. When parents are calm (especially moms), babies often settle more easily as well. They can sense tension and anxiety within a room.
Photographers aim to create a welcoming environment where parents can sit back, enjoy the moment, and watch their baby’s first portraits come to life.
Preserving the First Days Safely
The newborn stage is so incredibly brief, and those early days pass faster than most parents expect (basically in a blink of an eye). Professional newborn photography allows families to preserve these memories while ensuring babies are handled with the utmost care.
With the right experience, preparation, and safety practices in place, newborn photography sessions can be a peaceful and meaningful way to capture the beginning of your family’s story.
