Having a baby is such an amazing experience but there is something so uniquely special about bringing twins into the world. From the time they make their appearance, they have already shared a bond unlike any other, a special connection that began long before birth. As a newborn photographer and a mom of twins myself, photographing twins is one of my favorite things because every twin session tells the story of two tiny miracles that have already spent months and months growing side by side.
While a newborn twin photography session does requires a little bit more planning than photographing a single baby, the end result is nothing short of amazing.
Every Twin Newborn Session Is Unique
I’m stating the obvious but no two sets of twins are alike – each come in with their own little personalities.
Some twins sleep through the entire session, while others have a party mentality from the start. One twin may sleep soundly while the other wants to stay awake and develop FOMO. Most twins love being wrapped up together, while others tend to be at their happiest with just a little more personal space.
That’s why flexibility is so important during this type of newborn session. While I do have a workflow I follow to ensure I work efficiently to get the most amazing images possible, I pay attention to the babies and their little personalities to let me know what they are comfortable with while ensuring they remain comfortable, safe, and happy throughout the experience.
Safety First Always
EVERY newborn session has safety as the top priority always. Safety is THE most important part of every newborn session, but it becomes even more essential when photographing two babies together at the same time.
Every pose that I do is chosen with your babies’ comfort and safety in mind. Many of the images that maybe appear effortless and easy are actually carefully supported and spotted throughout the entire session. Proper positioning, posing, temperature of the studio, wrapping techniques, and gentle handling all play a key role in creating images safely.
During sessions I use an assistant who is always there as an extra set of hands. This is even more essential during a twin session. Remember it’s double of everything so twins need additional feeding, soothing, or snuggle breaks to help keep the session running smoothly. An extra set of hands during a twin newborn session is SO important. If you’re a newborn photographer and don’t have an assistant I HIGHLY recommend finding someone to help during a twin session. I don’t recommend using parents as assistants as your main goal for them should be to relax and enjoy the experience.
Capturing Their Natural Connection
One of the best things about photographing newborn twins is documenting the relationship they already share.
Whether they’re naturally snuggled and wrapped together, holding their tiny hands, resting cheek-to-cheek, or curling into one another, these little moments often become parents’ favorite images.
It’s truly amazing to capture those images that show the most amazing connection between twins.

Individual Baby Images Matter Too
While parents understandably love images of their newborn twins together, the individual images of each baby are truly just as important.
As much as we love that double baby connection, each baby deserves their own moment to shine.
Individual images allow you to recall the tiny details that make each baby of the duo unique – their little facial expressions, tiny details, tiny fingers, and little (but mighty) personality. Years from now, you’ll be able to look back and see how different (or surprisingly alike!) they were from the very beginning.
A balanced gallery includes both images together and individual images.
Expect a Little Extra Time for Magic
A newborn session with twins naturally takes a bit longer than a regular newborn session.
The why should be obvious as there are two babies instead of just one to photograph. There are more patience needed, more time to adjust posing, more diaper changes, more feedings, more soothing, and more opportunities for one baby to wake up while the other is sleeping.
I build extra time into every twin newborn session bc there’s double the love going on! Not only do I need to get images of your babies together but I also need to photograph them separately as well. I let my clients know that these sessions typically are a bit longer and to prepare for a session that could be about 3-4 hours long (opposed to a regular 2-3 hours).
My studio is setup with my clients in mind – I create a relaxing environment where my clients can be at ease and take some time to breathe, A relaxed atmosphere leads to happier babies, happier clients and beautiful images.
Coordinating Colors and Styling
Another one of my favorite parts of photographing newborn twins is creating setups that highlights both babies while still allowing each of them to have their own subtle individuality.
Every client is asked about color likes and dislikes which is part of the creative process. Soft neutral colors are always a classic choice, while gentle variations in wraps, layers, and textures help create beautiful setups without overwhelming the images.
The goal is always to create setups that feel cohesive throughout the entire gallery.

The Best Time to Photograph Newborn Twins
Just like with a regular newborn session, twins are ideally photographed within the first three weeks after birth.
However, because twins often arrive earlier than expected or may spend some time in the NICU, there is always plenty of flexibility. Every baby’s situation is different, and sessions are planned around when both babies are healthy and ready to have their session done.
The best advice is to always book your session at the beginning of your second trimester of pregnancy. This allows your photographer to accommodate your delivery date, even if your twins decide to arrive earlier than anticipated. Most newborn photographers only book a certain amount of due dates a month to help with flexibility of scheduling,
Choosing a Photographer for Twin Newborn Photography
When searching for a newborn photographer on Long Island (or elsewhere), experience photographing twins is definitely something to take into consideration.
Photographing two newborns at once requires experience, tons of patience, thoughtful posing, careful workflow, and a very strong understanding of newborn safety. An experienced, professional newborn photographer knows how to adapt and pivot when one baby needs extra attention while still creating a calm, relaxing and enjoyable experience for the entire family.
Don’t be afraid to ask about experience photographing multiples and be sure to review galleries featuring twins before booking.
These Days Pass Quickly
Life with newborn twins is super hectic and busy but it truly is a beautiful experience. Yes the the days are filled with feedings, diaper changes, little naps, and learning the rhythms of caring for two babies at once with lots and LOTS of sleep deprived nights in there but we wouldn’t trade it for anything.
It can feel overwhelming in the moment, but all these tiny details change so incredibly quickly.
Documented images allow you to remember how they fit perfectly together in your arms individually and together, how tiny their hands were, and how naturally they found comfort in each other.
