One of the questions I get most often from newborn clients is, “What do I need to do before my newborn session?”
In reality, really not much!
Those first few weeks with a new baby can feel like a chaotic blur of feedings, sleepless nights and trying to remember what day it is. The last thing I want is for my clients newborn to feel stressed or overwhelmed because their newborn session is approaching.
As a newborn photographer serving families from all over Long Island, I have made my session flow to be as easy and relaxed as possible. My job is to take care of all of the details of your session so you can focus solely on your sweet new baby.
Here are a few things that can help you feel prepared for your newborn session. I also send a complete session guide prior to newborn sessions to help my clients prepare for their special day.
First Things First: Do Not Stress
Here’s what you need to know first and foremost: your baby does not need to be the perfect baby and 9 times out of 10 they probably wont be, and that’s ok!
This is what is true: Newborns cry. They get hungry and need to feed. They need diaper changes and they need to be soothed often. Sometimes they can sleep soundly, and sometimes they decide they would rather party and be awake and have a severe case of FOMO.
And you know what? That’s completely normal. This wouldn’t be anything new!
I have photographed many babies over the many years I have been a newborn photographer, and every single baby an session is completely different. Your session is run around your baby’s needs. Sessions are baby led always. We take breaks when needed and move at a pace that keeps everyone, especially baby, comfortable.
Feed Your Baby Before the Session
Part of my session guide also includes instructions regarding feeding. A baby with full tummy usually equals a sleepy baby and goes a long way toward helping babies feel content and relaxed for the session.
I usually recommend feeding your baby no more than 30 minutes before you leave for the studio or on the way. Many babies need to be topped off during the session so don’t worry if your baby wants to eat again – it’s pretty normal.
Newborn sessions should never be rushed. I allow plenty of time for the session to be a baby led session.
Your Baby Should Be Dressed in Something Easy to Remove
This is key.
Little pajamas that zip, or snap or even the ones with the magnets in the front are ideal. This allows us to move into the session without disturbing them too much if they are sleeping.
Avoid under layers, tight socks outfits, or clothing that needs to be pulled over your baby’s head right before the session, as these can wake baby by having to remove and also can leave marks on newborn skin.
I Take Care of All Styling
Guess what? You don’t really need to bring anything outside of baby essentials.
I curate each session specifically to each client and provide carefully selected wraps, props, tiebacks, bonnets, and little pjs that coordinate throughout the session and photograph well together.
Over the many years I have been doing newborn photography, I’ve built a collection specifically designed for newborn photography. There’s no need to run out and get any outfits, wraps or props for your session.
If you have an item that is sentimental to you and your family you’d like included, I’m always super open to discussing incorporating it into your images.
What Should Parents Wear?
Another area I cover in my session guide to make the process as seamless as possible. When it comes to family images, simple is always best.
I encourage parents to wear neutral colors that match or coordinate and that won’t distract from you and your baby.
Some color options include:
* Cream
* White
* Tan
* Gray
* Black
* Muted earth tones
Most important – choose something you feel comfortable and confident wearing bc those first few weeks can sometimes make us feel uncomfortable in our skin (and that’s normal too!).
Trust the Whole Process
Many parents arrive feeling a bit nervous and unsure, especially if this is their first baby. Will my baby cooperate? Will my baby sleep? All common thoughts among new and even veteran parents.
Upon arrival I explain the whole process and ensure baby is in great hands. A few minutes into the start of the session, parents usually realize they can finally sit down, relax, and simply enjoy watching their sweet baby be photographed.
One of my favorite things about doing newborn photography is giving parents the opportunity to slow down for a quick minute during a very busy and chaotic season of life.
Those teeny tiny fingers and toes, sleepy yawns, and curled-up poses won’t last long. It’s actually the fastest transitioning phase we will ever have. Before you know it, your baby will be showing off their little personality, sitting, crawling, and taking their first steps.
These images become a way to hold onto a time in their lives that passes way too quickly.
A Note to My Long Island Families
Whether you’re welcoming your first baby or adding another little one to your growing family, it is such an incredible honor to capture this special time in yours and your baby’s life.
My ultimate goal is to create a relaxing, safe, and very enjoyable experience from the time you book with me until the very end when you receive your baby’s final gallery.
If you’re expecting and looking for a Long Island newborn photographer, I highly recommend doing your research and booking your newborn session at the beginning of your second trimester (or earlier if you’re comfortable) to ensure availability around your due date.
