The Best Time to Book Your Newborn Photography Session

Bringing a new baby into the world is one of life’s most beautiful things—and capturing those fleeting newborn moments is something you’ll treasure forever. If you’re having a baby, you might be wondering: when is the best time to book a newborn photography session?

In this blog I will answer that question and share expert tips to ensure you don’t miss this tiny  window of time—especially if you’re looking for a Long Island newborn photographer.

1. Book Early—Ideally in the Beginning of Your Second Trimester is Best

The best time to book your newborn photography session is at the beginning of your second trimester, around weeks 14 to 28.  You can definitely book earlier as well if you are comfortable doing so.  Many newborn photographers in Long Island (and beyond) limit the number of newborn sessions they take each month to allow flexibility around unpredictable due dates and to not overbook.

Booking early secures your spot on their calendar and gives you priority scheduling once your baby arrives. If you wait until after the birth, you risk missing out if your preferred photographer is already fully booked.

2. Why Timing Matters: The Sweet Spot for Newborn Photos

Wondering when newborn photos are actually taken? The ideal time to photograph newborns is within the first 21 days after birth (Again IDEAL but not limited to).

  • Babies are sleepiest and easiest to pose during this time.
  • They’re more likely to curl into those adorable womb-like positions.
  • Fewer skin issues (like baby acne or peeling) compared to later weeks.

Many newborn photographers across Long Island and beyond recommend scheduling your session during this timeframe to achieve those dreamy, cozy portraits that will melt hearts for generations to come.

3. What if Your Baby Arrives Early or Late?

It’s all good!  When you book in advance, your newborn photographer will typically reserve a floating date around your due date. Once the baby arrives, you’ll confirm the actual session date based on your little one’s actual date of birth.

This flexibility is key—experienced, professional newborn photographers understand that babies tend to have their own schedules and agendas to when they want to arrive.

4. Last-Minute Bookings: Am I Too Late?

If you’ve already delivered and haven’t booked yet, don’t panic!  While the first 21 days are ideal, many professional newborn photographers will work with babies up to 4-7 weeks old (though posing options may differ).  It is definitely worth reaching out even if you think you’re late to the game—you never know who may be able to squeeze in last-minute openings.
