The Little Things You’ll Miss About the Newborn Stage | Long Island Newborn Photography

There is something about the newborn stage that is almost impossible to explain until you are knee deep in it.

Those first few weeks with your new baby can feel like a crazy blur of feedings, diaper changes, and trying to get some sort of semblance sleep. You may feel beyond exhausted and then completely energized by this new little person in your life.

And then, before you realize it, that whole newborn stage starts to change – and FAST.

Their tiny fingers aren’t quite so tiny anymore. The newborn clothes that once looked gigantic on them suddenly fit (and maybe even a little too tight). Their little face begins to change, they become more aware, stronger, and that curled-up newborn position slowly starts to disappear.

The newborn stage is the shortest stage in life.

As a Long Island newborn photographer, one of the things I hear from parents on the regular is how quickly those first few weeks fly by.  That’s one of the reasons newborn photography is so important and so incredibly meaningful. It gives you the opportunity to preserve those tiny details that are so easy to forget and are gone so fast.

Those Tiny Fingers and Toes

The details of a newborn baby are some of my favorite things to photograph.

Their teeny tiny fingers. The little wrinkles around their knuckles. Their tiny fingernails. The way their entire hand can wrap around one of your fingers.

And let’s not forget about those sweet little feet, with their curled-up toes and wrinkly skin.

When you’re holding your newborn every day, you may feel like you’ll always remember exactly how small they were.  But babies change so quickly that those details can become surprisingly difficult to recall later on (believe me I know).

Newborn photography allows you to see those details again years from now.

The Way Your Baby Curls and Stretches

Newborns have a natural way of folding themselves into the sweetest little positions and also doing the “newborn stretch” which stretches and scrunches them into the most adorable little positions.

Their knees tucked up. Their little hands clenched and near their face. Their tiny bodies curled into that familiar newborn shape that they spent months in.

It’s a look that belongs specifically to those early days of your baby’s life.

During a newborn photography session, I love capturing these details through gentle, carefully considered posing while keeping your baby comfortable and safe.

These aren’t just adorable poses. These poses replicate how they looked in the womb and I get the opportunity to freeze those poses in photographs that families can cherish forever.

The Little Sounds They Make

Newborns are surprisingly noisy little people -it’s pretty funny!

The tiny grunts. The squeaks. The sighs. The little noises they make while stretching, settling, or drifting back to sleep.

You may not realize how much you’ll miss those sounds until they’re gone.

A photograph obviously can’t capture the sounds that babies make, but it can bring you right back to those moments – the way your baby looked, the way they curled, and the feeling of holding them during those newest newborn days.

That’s what makes newborn photos so incredibly special. They can bring back more than an image – they can bring back all those early memories.

Those Sleepy Newborn Faces

Remembering what your baby looked like when they were peacefully sleeping is the best.

Their relaxed little face. Tiny pouts. The occasional REM smile. Kissy faces as they stretch.

These are the details I love capturing.  Soft, natural images that highlight the features you’ll want to remember exactly as they were.

Your baby’s eyelashes, lips, fingers, toes, and tiny expressions may seem like small details now but years from now, they won’t feel small at all.

The Way Your Baby Fits in Your Arms

One of the things that changes faster than you expect is the way your newborn feels in your arms.

At first, they seem so incredibly small and fragile.

Then, what seems like overnight, they aren’t so little anymore.

This is one of the reasons I encourage parents to be part of their newborn photography session in some way or another. Your baby won’t always fit this way in your arms.  They won’t always curl up on your shoulder or peacefully sleep against your chest.

Newborn photography isn’t just about remembering what your baby looked like.  It’s also about remembering how it felt to hold them and how tiny they were in your hands.

Those First Little Outfits

The tiny little pajamas. The going-home outfit. The little hat or now that seemed almost comically large when you first put it on them.

All those first outfits have a way of becoming a bit sentimental.

And then, in a blink of an eye, you’re packing them away because your baby has outgrown them.

It’s crazy how quickly something that once seemed so small and simple can become a reminder of just how much your baby has grown.

The Details You Think You’ll Always Remember

When you’re right smack in the middle of those first weeks you may think you’ll remember all the things.

You’ll remember their little face.

You’ll remember their tiny fingers.

You’ll remember how teeny tiny they truly were.

You’ll remember how they slept (or didn’t sleep).

And maybe you will remember some of those things.

But the thing is memories change with time. Details become less bright.  You know your baby was tiny, but sometimes it’s difficult to remember just how tiny they were.

And that, of course, is where professional newborn photography becomes so meaningful.

The close ups.

Their tiny toes.

Their wrinkly fingers.

Their little lips.

The way their hand rests against yours.

These details can become some of the most treasured photographs that you will have.

Your Baby Will Change Before You Know It

As a newborn photographer on Long Island, I see this transformation all the time.

Families come to my studio with a tiny, sleepy newborn, and before they know it, that baby is growing, becoming more alert, and changing right in front of them.

That’s why I believe newborn photography is about more than simply creating beautiful images.  It’s about preserving a moment in your family’s story that only exists for a very short amount of time.

For my newborn clients, I want their images to capture all those little details that made their baby their baby during those first chaotic weeks.

Those are the things you may not realize you’ll miss.

Until one day, you do.

Why Newborn Photography Matters

Your baby is going to grow and grow fast.

The newborn clothes will get packed away.  Those curled-up legs will stretch out. Your baby will become way more alert, more active, and eventually way too big to curl up on your chest the way they once did.

And that’s exactly how it should be.

But you don’t have to let those little details disappear completely.

A professional newborn photography session gives you the opportunity to preserve this incredibly fleeting part of your family’s story.

Because years from now, you may not remember every detail of those first weeks – but you’ll look at those images and remember how tiny they really were.

And you’ll be grateful you captured the little things.
