One of the most common questions I hear from parents is: “What should we wear for our newborn session?” Your baby will always be front and center and I will take care of what baby will be in during the family portion, but what you wear plays a big role in your images turning out timeless, cozy, and beautifully connected. If you’re planning your newborn photography session here on Long Island, here are some tips to help you figure out that day of look.
Keeping It Neutral and Timeless
Neutral colors like black, white, gray, tan are best. They allow your newborn to stand out while creating a cohesive look. Avoid logos, distracting patterns, or bright, bright colors as they will be a distraction in the images.
You Can Match or Coordinate Colors – Just Don’t Clash!
Everyone can all wear the exact same color or you can coordinate colors (think in terms of a *palette*). For example, if mom is in a cream dress, dad could wear a tan shirt and siblings could be in other coordinating colors to those. Either choice creates beautiful harmony and timeless images.
Choose Comfort First
Newborn sessions often involve cuddling and moving around to gently position your sweet baby. Choose clothes you feel comfortable in and that allow you to relax because when you feel at ease, it shows in the photos. I highly recommend nice t shirts or soft, comfy dresses for mom and a t shirt or comfy polo shirt for dad.
Keep It Flattering for Mom
New moms should feel beautiful AND comfortable. Dresses with flowy fabrics or t shirts paired with soft skirts or leggings are perfect. Avoid anything too tight or structured, your session is about love and connection, not fitting into something that doesn’t feel right. Don’t bring out those pre-pregnant jeans!!
Keep Dad’s Look Simple
A well-fitted t shirt or polo shirt works wonders. Pair with simple jeans or chinos, and definitely avoid loud, distracting prints or distracting colors. The goal is for dad’s choice of clothes to complement without overpowering. Avoid button down, long sleeved shirts as they can get very wrinkled very quickly and can look awkward when taking pics with baby.
Think About Subtle Texture
Soft knits, lace, linen, or cotton layers add subtle textures and interest to images. These textures look beautiful against your baby’s delicate skin and create a cozy, timeless feel.
Siblings
If siblings are part of the session, keep their outfits light, comfortable and simple too. Neutral-toned dresses, rompers, or solid t shirts with shorts/pants works great. This keeps the focus on the connection between them and their new baby brother or sister.
Final Word: Keep It Authentic
At the end of the day, the best images come from feeling comfortable and like yourselves. Choose clothes that make you feel comfortable, confident, and true to you – You got this!
